Many people find relief by applying an ice pack several times a day to the affected area.

Ice packs can be made by wrapping chipped ice or ice cubes in a clean cloth. You may also want to wrap the cloth with a plastic bag that you can dispose of after each use.

Ice packs should be applied for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Ice packs are often used in an alternating fashion with sitz baths to improve results. The warm sitz baths help blood flow more easily through the veins. Applying the ice pack after a sitz bath causes the veins to contract, reduces swelling and relieves pain.

You can also apply an ice pack for several minutes each night before going to bed. This can make you more comfortable and allow you to get a good night's sleep.

Ice gel packs can also be used.

You should be careful to not place ice directly on the rectum without wrapping it in cloth because it may burn the skin.
